Photo of the Day: Roosevelt & Opción Múltiple

Today, students from two high schools, Riverdale and Roosevelt, were at Milagro for a matinee of Opción Múltiple, the dark comedy in Spanish playing through the end of the month. After the performance, the group from Roosevelt High had the opportunity to share questions and feedback with director Nelda Reyes and her cast. The students' perspective was that much richer since they had the opportunity to read the script and meet the playwright before coming to the show.

Hello. My name is Sofia and I am one of Ms. Garcia - Velasco's AP Spanish students and I just wanted to say thank you for letting my class and myself to participate in watching the amazing performance of "Opcion Multiple". I laughed, smiled and cried watching this performance and I would watch it a million times more. Reading and watching the play are two completely different things and I'm glad that I got to experience both. First off, I want to thank you for the warm welcoming and for being so kind and nice with all of us. The whole experience was incredible, and the play was amazing. It was so cool seeing the whole story acted out after reading it. Comparing similar things to the story and finding out new things as well. It was funny, sad, serious; a masterpiece. After reading the play in class I was really looking forward to watching it, and very nervous of seeing how it would come out. Fresh and fun Mexican comedy tonight at Milagro--OPCION MULTIPLE about a woman with multiple personalities, all of whom appear as colorful characters in the play. It's light-hearted, fast-paced and colorful with a bevy of fine Spanish-speaking actors. I think that by presenting this play in Spanish, [Milagro] is capturing many cultural nuances and much humor that would be lost otherwise. There are English supertitles to enhance comprehension for non-Spanish speakers. I really enjoyed the opportunity to see a play by a contemporary Mexican playwright under the direction of Mexican-born Director Nelda Reyes.

Milagro Theater's "Opción Múltiple" (a play based on the experiences of someone with Dissociative Identity Disorder or ‪#‎DID‬‬‬‬‬) is being run through February 28. Following their matinee production on February 22nd, Athena will be one of the panelists who were invited to answer audience questions about DID. The matinee is @ 2pm and the panel is @ 4pm.

Julia: a woman with a plan (Bilingüe)

JULIA: If you want something done right, let Julia plan it: it might not work out just how you want it, but at least you'll have a road map and a drill sergeant to lead the march. Armed with the stereotypical weapon of Latina moms, she wields her chancla (slipper or sandal) while doing her best to keep the willful members of her family in line as needed. However, she has her own thoughts and desires, and keeping herself on task is not always possible.

A different "Diana": sniffing out Sabueso in Opción Múltiple (bilingüe)

SABUESO: Although far from the brightest bulb in the chandelier, his loyalty and protective nature are never in question, and in fact, reflect the nature of his nickname (sabueso means "hound" in Spanish). That being said, the medal for "Best Guard Dog" is not in the cards for him as long as he keeps those headphones pressed to his head. Music, like his bark, are his form of refuge, and if we dig deeper, we find his tender center that needs as much loving care as the rest of his chattier family.

OLGA: Truly young at heart, she has a flair for the dramatic that is certain to make an impression. A fashionista from a young age, she also enjoys fine foods and watching movies. She may not always understand everything, but  her childhood has given her great wisdom that is belied by her apparent innocence. Even though it may seem she is not so stable, it is impossible to forget she continues to learn from the world (and personalities) around her.

OLGA: Con un corazón verdaderamente joven, su tendencia por lo dramático nunca falla en hacer una impresión. The talented group of Opción Múltiple

Milagro's 10th annual Spanish language production starts tomorrow night with the USA premiere of Opción Múltiple ( Multiple Choice), and we are ecstatic about the magnificent Latino cast director Nelda Reyes gathered. Read on to learn about this talented group who came together for our thought provoking, delightful and authentic Mexican dark comedy that only Milagro can bring you, and get your tickets today! 

Yolanda Porter (Diana) says acting is her passion. She really enjoyed acting ever since she was a child, but never pursued it as a career until she had the opportunity to work as an extra on a T.V. show. Amazed by the behind-the-scenes experience, she decided to take acting classes and concentrate on improving her skills. She has had the opportunity to work on T.V., film and theatre, she is currently co-writing and in pre-production of a web series. This is her return to theater after 5 years and she is very excited and grateful for the opportunity to be  a part of this wonderful play and cast.

Roberto Astorga (Dr. Ricardo/Gerardo/Medardo) was born in Mexico City and studied theatre at UNAM. He has worked under the direction of José Luís Ibáñez, Rafael López Miarnau, Olga Sanchez, Robin Smith, Hector Mendoza and Miguel Sabido. Roberto works at Home Forward and is an Iyengar Yoga instructor. For Roberto [in the U.S.] “As artists, we weave our souls together to create our art, not for personal gratification, but to generate truth onstage.” He dedicates  his work to all the children who have suffered trauma, and to those who remain quiet behind the scenes, his wife Erica and childrens Natalia and Roberto.

 

Veronika Nuñez (Olga) is a graduate of Portland Actors Conservatory. Born in Texas and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Verónika moved to Portland in 2000. This is her eighth production with Milagro, her last one being Dance for a Dollar during the spring of 2013. She was also the assistant director for Milagro’s award-winning production of Boleros for the Disenchanted. Some of her favorite roles include: Esperanza (El Zorrito/ NWCT), Portia (Julius Caesar/Post 5 Theater), and Carla (How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents/Milagro). She dedicates this play to her grandmother, Lalena: “Your love will always speak through my art. Thank you for accepting me completely, just the way I am”.

Vicente Guzman-Orozco (Sabueso) returns once more to the company of his professional debut (more than two decades and hundreds of performances later). He was most recently seen in El Tesoro/The Treasure and Dance for a Dollar. Other memorable shows from Vicente’s many years at Milagro include Entre Villa y una mujer desnuda, The Shrunken Head of Pancho Villa, Heroes and Saints, and Te llevo en la sangre, and from 1995-98, as resident playwright he wrote 8 plays for the touring company. Other favorite productions include the premiere of Cupid and Psyche (Stark Raving Theatre), ¡Entusiasmo! (Do Jump!), A Streetcar Named Desire and Take Me Out (Artists Repertory Theatre).

Amalia Alarcón Morris  (Julia) is an actor of Cuban and Ecuadorian descent. She is thrilled to be working with Milagro for the first time in Opción Múltiple alongside an extraordinary director, cast and crew. Amalia studied theater in south Florida and performed in Miami and New York before shifting gears and moving to Portland in the 90’s. She recently returned to the stage with Magenta Theater in Vancouver, WA, performing in four productions over the last two years. When she isn’t rehearsing or performing, Amalia daylights as a bureaucrat and spends as much time as possible with her beloved husband James and their sons Carlos and Sam. She hopes this show with Milagro is the first of many future collaborations.

      

Nurys Herrera (Petra) is from Lima, Peru, and started to study acting at the age of 12, continuing to study what she loves most, graduating with a degree in acting. Nurys is a veteran of the Milagro stage — this will be her 26th play! Nurys was last seen in Dance for a Dollar, La Celestina, Ana en el trópico, Raíz and more...She feels very happy and thankful to be directed by her talented friend Nelda Reyes and even more excited to share stage with old time and new friends. Besides acting, Nurys is busy with voice-over jobs and TV commercials. She’d like to dedicate her work to her lovely family and her unconditional friends!

La décima producción en idioma español de Milagro inicia mañana con el estreno estadounidense de Opción Múltiple. Aquí en Milagro estamos emocionados de contar con un magnífico elenco latino  bajo la dirección de Nelda Reyes. Conozca hoy este talentoso grupo que traerá al escenario una deliciosa comedia negra muy mexicana, provocadora, y auténtica que sólo Milagro puede presentar en la region. 

Yolanda Porter (Diana) dice que actuar es su pasión. Ella ha disfrutado actuar desde que era niña,  pero no había ejercido  su pasión como profesión hasta que tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar como extra en un programa de televisión. Asombrada por la experiencia detrás de camaras, decidió tomar clases de actuación y enfocarse en mejorar sus habilidades. Yolanda ha tenido la oportunidad de trabajar en televisión, cine y teatro, y actualmente está en el proceso de la coescritura y producción de una serie para  internet. Con Opción Múltiple, Yolanda regresa al teatro despúes de cinco años y está muy emocionada y agradecida por la oportunidad de ser parte de un maravilloso elenco y producción.

Ella regresó recientemente al escenario con Magenta Theater en Vancouver, WA, colaborando con ellos en cuatro producciones en los últimos dos años.  Cuando Amalia no esta ensayando, ella hace el papel de burócrata y pasa todo el tiempo que le es posible con su amado esposo James y sus hijos Carlos y Sam. Amalia espera que esta obra con Milagro sea la primera de muchas en el futuro.

Nurys Herrera (Petra) es de Lima, Perú, y comenzó a estudiar actuación a la edad de 12,  y continuó estudiando lo que más le gusta,  hasta titularse en actuación. Diana: The woman at the center of the storm

Although she strikes most people as shy and nervous, once she's comfortable she is very open and loves to talk. As part of the editorial team at a magazine, she's a modern, city woman. She enjoys sipping wine over a nice dinner, but she doesn't shy away from a tequila shot - straight. An occasional smoker, she loves cooking, flowers and keeping a journal.

Aunque a la mayoría les puede parecer tímida y nerviosa, cuando está cómoda es muy abierta y platicadora. Como parte del equipo editorial de una revista, es una moderna mujer citadina. "Opción Múltiple" and its author coming to Milagro!

Milagro is ramping up for its next production, Opción Múltiple, a dark comedy taking a light-hearted look at mental health issues. The play, originally written in 1999 for 5 young Mexican actresses of the author's acquaintance, has since been performed all over Latin America and, two years ago, in Spain. In preparation for the opening and the playwright's upcoming visit to Portland, Marketing Assistant Vicente Guzmán-Orozco, who is also part of the cast, had the chance to ask the playwright some questions about this hilarious script. Vicente Guzmán-Orozco: Is Opción Múltiple different (and not just in originality) to other plays and adaptations you have given the world’s audiences? How did its beginnings affect the subsequent productions?

Luis Mario Moncada Gil: I can say that the rest of my plays don’t have much to do with Opción Múltiple; I have always worked mainly in in the field of experimental theatre, playing with structure, hybridizing genres, creating narrative adaptations, incorporating multimedia, etc. Opción Múltiple is a play I wrote after a great failure; all I wanted was to have fun and forget the heaviness of earlier works. However, audience response to the play was such that it certainly has forced me to keep it in mind every time I take up a new project. It’s a little deceptive, since many times people request plays thinking of something similar to Opción Múltiple, and it is very difficult for me to repeat a model, I need to do different things. I have not written another comedy like it, but I have become more conscious of character construction and the audience's reaction. 

VGO: Each play is for its author like a child that is born, often with no control over its future. What surprises has Opción Múltiple brought with it since its first performance?

LMMG: I am surprised by the way the play has been produced all over Mexico and other countries, especially because I initially did not have high expectations for it. Two years ago it was staged in Spain with an exclusively-male cast, and they say it works quite well. It is produced often by university and community theatres. All in all, my greatest surprise has been seeing an American TV series handling the exact same premises: the incredible part was that the main character (some years older) had the same alter egos and the troubling situations that they put her in were very similar. For a moment I became angry and even thought about suing, but once some time had passed I reached the conclusion (or so I want to see it to keep my ego in check) that some ideas just float in the ether. What is certain is that the series ended abruptly and it did not reach the denouement that it hinted at; if the child alter ego had uncovered the memory that generated the trauma, I surely would have called my attorney, … but now we will never know.

VGO: What kind of response has there been from the professional mental health community?

LMMG: Although the play was never intended to be an exhaustive portrayal of a mental issue, it has been generally well received by the specialists in the field; there have been post-performance talks and the most amusing thing is that – regardless of the mental health issues – people always feel a natural inclination for one or another of the personalities.

VGO: You mention in your blog that the idea has risen to turn the play into a sitcom. Do you still have that idea in mind and/or has there been development in that direction?

LMMG: There was, some time ago, talk of the actor and producer Eugenio Derbez creating a sitcom based on it, which never materialized. I feel that the elements to carry it out are there (I have mentioned the American series that uses similar premises) but I am not one to revolve for long around only one project, and instead need to work on new things, so I have not followed up; truth be told, television in Mexico is very stagnant and does not seek out new content.

VGO: How do you feel to see your plays so well received overseas?

LMMG: Well, I would not claim that my plays are performed everywhere or that they have great success; I should instead confess it is the exception. As I mentioned, I move within a more experimental environment, my plays are not exactly repertory material, nor are they able to be staged by just any group; rather they concern language experimentation or circumstantial subjects, such as the play I wrote about the Facebook phenomenon in 2009. It is true that I have written works for companies abroad, most recently for The Royal Shakespeare Company (A soldier in every son), a saga about the power struggle in pre-Hispanic Mexico based on Shakespeare’s history plays, but in general I work mostly domestically, not thinking about the international reach of my plays. When it happens, such as in this case, I consider it a huge gift that I receive from my profession.

"Opción Múltiple" y su autor ¡en camino a Milagro!

Milagro se prepara para su siguiente producción, Opción Múltiple, una comedia oscura con una divertida mirada a una condición mental. La obra, escrita originalmente en 1999 para cinco jóvenes actrices mexicanas conocidas por el autor, ha tenido exitosas presentaciones en toda Latinoamérica, y hace dos años, en España. Al acercarse el estreno y la visita del autor, el asistente de mercadeo, Vicente Guzmán Orozco, quien también es parte del elenco, tomó la oportunidad de hacerle unas preguntas al dramaturgo sobre su hilarante libreto. Vicente Guzman Orozco: ¿Es Opción Múltiple distinta (y no solo en originalidad) a otras obras y adaptaciones que Ud. le ha otorgado al público mundial? ¿Cómo ha impactado su génesis en los montajes consiguientes?

Luis Mario Moncada Gil: Puedo decir que el resto de mis obras no tienen mucho que ver con Opción múltiple; yo siempre me he movido más en el ámbito del teatro experimental, juegos de estructura, hibridación de géneros, teatro narrado, multimedia, etc. Opción múltiple es una obra que escribí luego de un gran fracaso; lo único que quería era divertirme y olvidar la densidad de trabajos anteriores. Sin embargo, fue tal la reacción del público ante la obra que ciertamente me ha obligado a tomarla en cuenta cada vez que asumo un nuevo proyecto. Es un poco engañoso porque muchas veces me piden obras pensando en algo similar a Opción múltiple, y me cuesta mucho trabajo repetir un modelo, yo necesito hacer cosas distintas. Nunca he vuelto a escribir una comedia así, pero sí me he vuelto más consciente de la construcción de personajes y de la recepción del público.

VGO: Cada obra es para el artista como un hijo que engendra, muchas veces sin control de su futuro. ¿Cuáles han sido las sorpresas en la trayectoria de Opción Múltiple desde su estreno?

LMMG:Me sorprende la forma en que la obra se ha reproducido en todo el país y en otras naciones, sobre todo porque inicialmente no tenía yo muchas expectativas puestas en ella. Hace dos años se montó en España con un elenco exclusivamente masculino, y dicen que funcionaba muy bien. Con frecuencia se interpreta en universidades y en teatro amateur. Con todo, mi mayor sorpresa ha sido ver una serie de televisión norteamericana que manejaba exactamente las mismas premisas: lo increíble es que la protagonista (unos años mayor) tenía los mismos alter-egos y los problemas en que la metían eran muy similares. Por un momento me enojé y hasta pensé en demandar, pero pasado el tiempo llegué a la conclusión (así prefiero pensarlo para que no me gane el ego) que hay situaciones que flotan en el ambiente. Lo cierto es que la serie terminó abruptamente y nunca llegó al desenlace que se veía venir: si resultare que el alter-ego infantil hubiese destapado el recuerdo que originó el trauma, seguramente hubiese llamado a mi abogado..., pero eso nunca lo sabremos.

 VGO: ¿Qué tipo de reacciones ha habido de los profesionales de la salud mental?

LMMG:A pesar de que la obra no pretendía ser muy exhaustiva en la exposición de un problema mental, en general ha sido muy valorada por especialistas; se han hecho conversaciones posteriores a algunas funciones y lo más divertido ha sido que –más allá de salud mental o no– la gente siempre siente inclinación natural por alguna de las personalidades.

VGO: Ha mencionado en su blog que ha existido la idea de adaptar la obra a una comedia televisiva (sitcom). ¿Continúa Ud. con tal visión y/o qué tipo de desarrollo ha habido?

LMMG:Hubo hace tiempo pláticas para que el actor y productor Eugenio Derbez hiciera con ella un sitcom, sin embargo, nunca llegó a materializarse. A mí me parece que existen los elementos para llevarla a cabo (ya hablé de una serie norteamericana que utiliza premisas similares) pero soy poco dado a quedarme girando en un solo proyecto, más bien necesito hacer cosas nuevas, así que no le he dado seguimiento y, la verdad, en México la televisión está muy estancada y no busca nuevos contenidos.

VGO: ¿Cuál es su opinión al ver sus obras tan bien recibidas en el extranjero?

LMMG: Bueno, tampoco voy a decir que mis obras estén en todas partes y que tengan gran éxito, más bien debo confesar que es una excepción. Como dije, yo me muevo en un terreno más experimental, mis obras no son propiamente de repertorio, no son obras que puedan ser montadas por cualquier grupo; más bien responden a experimentos de lenguaje o temas coyunturales, como la obra que escribí sobre el fenómeno de Facebook en 2009. Es cierto que he escrito obras para compañías extranjeras, la más reciente fue para The Royal Shakespeare Company (A soldier in every son), una saga sobre la lucha por el poder en el México prehispánico basado en las obras históricas de Shakespeare, pero en general hago un trabajo más bien doméstico y no estoy pensando en la proyección internacional de mis obras. Cuando ocurre, como en este caso, lo tomo como un enorme regalo que me ha dado mi profesión.
