Una Calavera para Ozzie

During last Tuesday's wonderful ¡Viva Milagro! dinner for Día de los Muertos, a few lucky folks were honored with calaveras written especially for them. What is a calavera? Well, in Spanish, the word calavera means, literally, "skull" but also refers to festive verses written for the Day of the Dead intended to poke fun at the living. Here's one that Dañel presented to board member Ozzie ...

CALAVERA
Osvaldo González
by Stephanie Oliver

Alas, poor Ozvaldo, we knew him well
He died one foot in Heaven, the other in Hell.
The Devil had designs for a heat-plant overhaul
But St. Peter said “no:” sending an R-F-P
For an industrial park and a mall

The Spirits tried to nab Ozvaldo as he cycled to and fro
They lifted him airborne, scattering his floor plans here and there
But Ozzie was bound for Milagro as the Devil shouted: “No fair.”
His bicycle wheels still spinning — though laden with crude
His jacket — a yellow beacon — spattered with mud.

We raise a glass to our brave and talented Ozvaldo
To celebrate a job well done, He & Catrina están bailando.
