The cast of "B'aktun 13" is now rehearsing onstage, with opening night just a couple weeks away. Here's an update (and special offer) from playwright Dañel Malán:
The month has just flown by since my last post. The cast and crew of B’aktun 13 have been working away like crazy to create a new work that respectfully addresses Mayan culture in a meaningful way. Indigenous culture is connected to nature and through Mayan myth we are able to better understand our connection to the earth. In Mayan culture the conch in a sacred symbol of man’s connection to the environment. In our production, we have created a sacred space and place the conches reverently on the perimeter of our circle.
For those of you who have attended a production at Milagro, what are the chances that these vessels of our symbolic representation will be respected on their small pedestals of straw? Or will they be kicked to the floor as unsuspecting audience members ramble to their seats in the semi-darkness of the theatre? This is the question that our cast is contemplating, as we worry that others won’t share our reverence for this sacred item. Will the shells be viewed as just props, or will it be clear that we have placed special value on it? Should we take a chance or assume the worst and plan on a means of delivering the conches to the stage after everyone is seated? Please share your thoughts with us by responding to malan@milagro.org for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the show!
