Play in Progress: "Boleros" takes its first steps

"B'aktun 13" hasn't even opened yet, and we've begun rehearsals for the next show, "Boleros for the Disenchanted" by José Rivera. As we have been doing all season long, we'll be taking you backstage during the next few months to watch the play come together for its Feb. 10 opening night. Watch for interviews with actors, profiles of designers and background information from our study guide. But we begin with these notes from the director, Antonio Sonera ...

I have spent the last few months thinking about Boleros for the Disenchanted, which is the play that I am directing at Miracle. Suddenly the holiday was here and then it was a few days before first rehearsal. I found myself very excited and nervous. I started to go to my familiar forms of inspiration, a song or two from Tom Waits, read some Bukowski, look at art from Dalí, read Neruda and The Invitation by Oriah Mountain Dreamer, and of course read the text of Boleros itself. José Rivera is one of my favorite playwrights and this play offers so much in the way of inspiration about the stories of our lives and the magic that is love that guides us through union. I take all this inspiration and try to say some words of wisdom at the first rehearsal. Honestly, I am just grateful to be there with such an amazing group of artists. But I call upon the man himself, José Rivera to offer me and the cast some words of wisdom, and he writes me back … be honest, remember the humor is how these people share their love,  they live passionately, their anger is full of storytelling, their treasure is their words. Listen to the Coquis.

So the moment before we read the script for the first time, we do as he says and we listen to the Coquis…which is a small frog with a big voice in Puerto Rico. I invite you to listen too and to feel the inspiration the Coquis has to offer:

More to come later …
