Meet the playwright of "Jardín de Sueños"

Some of you may think that the title of our next production, Jardín de Sueños, sounds a bit familiar? Well, several years ago, our Spanish-language ensemble created a similar show with the same title. That production was based on a script by Pablo Jimenez and our Teatro Español actors. For this new incarnation, however, we handed that text over to playwright Sofia May-Cuxim, who took that seed and grew a whole verdant garden of theatre filled with Latino folktales while updating the play with a very modern, relevant theme. We've already met the cast and we've heard from Director Nelda Reyes, so now let's find out a little more about the woman behind the words ...

Sofia May-Cuxim is originally from Mexico City, where she studied Dramatic Literature at UNAM. She has received prizes for Acting, Producing and Singing in Mexico and Los Angeles. In February, the Mexican government will publish the collection Migrant Stories, a contest she won for the second time in a row. A veteran of the stage since 1974, Sofia made her debut at Milagro in 2010 with ¡Viva Don Juan!, and performed in Ana en el trópico in 2011. Specializing in comedy, other of her plays are Mingorote and You don't look Mexican. Jardin de Sueños is her first play produced in Portland. She dedicates this production's work with love to her father, Gonzalo.

Sofia May-Cuxim proviene de la Ciudad de México, donde estudió la carrera de Literatura Dramática en la UNAM. Recibió premios en Mexico y Los Angeles por actuación, producción, y canto. En febrero el gobierno mexicano publicará la antología Historias de Migrantes, donde resultó ganadora por segunda vez consecutiva.  Veterana de la escena desde 1974, Sofía hizo su debut en Milagro con ¡Viva Don Juan! en 2010, y Ana en el trópico en el 2011. Especializada en comedia, otras de sus obras son Mingorote, y Tú no pareces mexicana. Jardin de Sueños es su primera obra producida en Portland. Le dedica este montaje con cariño as su padre, Gonzalo.
