Mientras que hay vida, hay esperanza
“While there’s life, there’s hope.” This familiar saying epitomizes Miracle Theatre Group’s 2012-2013 season, one filled with tenacious and optimistic characters who follow their dreams no matter what the obstacles, who reach out for love and connection, who strive to not just make the most of their situation, but to rise above and reach the stars. There’s no reason to shy away from challenges when one can choose to embrace life and revel in the good fortune that comes with boldness. The stories we will share with you next season are nothing short of inspiring.
But before all the drama begins, we first celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, late September, with our fourth annual La Luna Nueva festival. We’ll be announcing a complete festival schedule later this summer, but you can be sure there will be a diverse line-up of music, dance and literary events showcasing our community’s emerging artists and seasoned pros. Get ready — there will be something new and different every night!
And there’s more to Milagro than just what you see on the MainStage. Throughout the year, you’ll also find your amigos performing Aventuras de Don Quixote for children and families at libraries and schools around Portland while B’aktun 13 travels to universities and community centers around the country. Those comfy refurbished seats (have you named yours yet?) will again be filled to capacity for our annual community Christmas Posada Milagro and for our celebration of the 2013 International Women’s Day, Mundo de las Mujeres. El Centro Milagro will continue to host regular exhibitions of work by regional Latino visual artists as well as a variety of community gatherings and events, including the Small- and Mid-sized Arts Coalition, the Portland Theatre Marketers Roundtable, Los Porteños Latino Writers Group, Opciones y Educaci&o acute;n, Latino Artists eXchange and many others.
What Olga reminds us in her curtain speeches is true: Milagro is your home for the finest Latino arts and culture experiences in the Northwest. When you are here, we want you to feel at home, to see yourself onstage, because through the cultural lens of latinidad, we embrace the full spectrum of humanity. And when you’re here, we want to entertain you with exciting, intriguing, powerful work that is always memorable.
Our home is your home. Nuestra casa es tu casa.

LA LUNA NUEVA

RAÍZ
World Premiere
An original, bilingual celebration of the Day of the Dead created by Martín Milagro
OCTOBER 18 to NOVEMBER 11, 2012
Every year, the dead are commemorated in Portland’s longest-running Día de los muertos celebration. This year, we unearth the interwoven roots of pre-Hispanic customs and traditions found at the juncture of life and death. Are we but dreaming and awake only when we die? Through music, dance and legend, we explore that thin veil that separates our world from the realm of our indigenous ancestors.
A bilingual Teatro Milagro touring production written by Dañel Malán
JANUARY 10-19, 2013
In Tehuantepec dress with eyebrows taking flight like the wings of a raven, Frida Kahlo is legendary for her numerous affairs, self-portraits and an independence that inspired generations of feminists around the world. From the streetcar accident that left her crippled, to her torrid relationship with muralist Diego Rivera, life and art intertwine in this story of one of Mexico’s most acclaimed visual artists. She was called a surrealist, but Frida said she never painted dreams, only her own reality.
LA CELESTINA
A riotous tragicomedy adapted from Fernando de Rojas’ classic Spanish Golden Age novel
FEBRUARY 7 to MARCH 2, 2013
Presented in Spanish with easy-to-follow supertitles in English
Sponsored by Josie Mendoza and Hugh Mackworth
In this bigger-than-life comedy, Calisto is a young and impulsive nobleman who's fallen madly in love with Melibea, the daughter of a rich businessman. But to win her over, the lovesick Calisto resorts to the less-than-pure magic of La Celestina, a bawdy sorceress whose scheming touches off a string of events with startling consequences. Dressed in Golden Age finery, this seriously funny critique of human nature remains as potent today as when it launched Spain’s literary renaissance in 1499.
GUAPA
World Premiere
A new play in English by Caridad Svich
MARCH 21 to APRIL 13, 2013
Single-mom Roly lives in a dusty Texas border town that everyone longs to escape. She’s never seen anything like Guapa, a natural-born athlete with a fiery ambition to become an international soccer star. When Guapa joins Roly’s family, everyone’s life is turned upside down. With only one shot to reach the big leagues from the barrio, how can Guapa convince the non-believers to let go of their doubts, spread their wings and fly? This inspiring story will have you cheering in the aisles!
DANCE FOR A DOLLAR
World Premiere
An original dance theatre production created by Mariana Carreño King and Daniel Jáquez

Check your worries at the door and feel your body come to life among the joyful sounds of duranguense, folklórico and cumbia!
