Antonio Skármeta, the writer of Ardiente Paciencia

Antonio Skármeta was born in the town of Antofagasta, Chile. A student of philosophy and writing, he graduated in 1964 from the Pedagogical Institute of the University of Chile, where he became known for his work as an actor and director. He expanded his studies in the US, and returned to Chile to become a professor at the University of Chile from 1967 to 1973. However, prompted by the fall of the Allende government, he moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, and then in 1975 to Berlin. He’s shared his experiences of exile in several works, including No pasó nada (1982), a sad and poetic store about a child’s exile from Chile to Berlin. He originally wroteArdiente Paciencia in 1983 as a radio play, then rewrote it for the stage in 1984, and then as a short novel in 1985. The novel formed the basis of the award-winning Italian film, Il Postino in 1995.

In 2002, Skármeta received the UNESCO Prize for Children’s Literature in support of Tolerance, for his work La composición. Skármeta continues scriptwriting for film and radio, and many of his works have been translated in a variety of languages, made into movies, and in the case of Ardiente Paciencia, shaped for the stage

Antonio Skármeta nació en Antofagasta, Chile.  Estudió Filosofía y Letras, se graduó en 1964 del Instituto Pedagógico de la Universidad de Chile, donde se volvió conocido por su trabajo como actor y director.  Amplió sus estudios en los EEUU y regresó a Chile para convertirse en profesor en la Universidad de Chile desde 1967 hasta 1973. Tras la caída de Salvador Allende, se trasladó primero a Buenos Aires, Argentina, y luego en 1975 a Berlín.  Compartió su experiencia del exilio en varias obras en las que constan No pasó nada (1982), una triste y poética historia acerca de un niño exiliado de Chile a Berlín.  Ardiente Paciencia fue escrita primero como un guión para radio 1983, luego la versión teatral en 1984 y como novela corta en 1985.  Esta novela fue la base para la película italiana galardonada, Il Postino en 1995.

En el 2002 Skármeta recibió el premio UNESCO de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil en Pro de la Tolerancia por su obra La composición.  Además se ha dedicado a la elaboración de guiones para cine y radio, muchas de sus obras han sido traducidas a varios idiomas, llevadas al cine y como en el caso de Ardiente paciencia al teatro.
