Teatro Milagro: Making a Difference

Español abajo
When audience raves bring your show around for a third year in a row as has happened to Teatro Milagro's production, Frida un retablo, you know it is striking a nerve or filling a need. However, it is when you hear of the effect that your performance has on its public that makes your work as an artist that much rewarding in that respect.

After a recent performance at Salem Hospital, a physician took the time to let us know of a particular insight and result in his own practice, namely a commitment "to be more aware of cultural issues and to be more sensitive to differences and personal preferences made by patients and families."

That's our Teatro Milagro. Opening hearts and minds through the vibrancy of Latino culture and history.

La Luna Nueva: Teatro Milagro Away and at Home

Frida un retablo touring story of mexican artists Kahlo and Diego Rivera

Poised to take flight "like the wings of a raven", the Teatro Milagro team is ready for their latest whirlwind tour: three states in ten days!

We're excited, they're excited, and the welcoming venues are also excited!

While we're busy putting on La Luna Nueva, Portland's biggest fiesta of Latinidad, the folks in Holland, Michigan are hard at work on their own Tulipanes Film and Music Festival celebrating "the many contributions of Latino Art, Film and Music," for which they are presenting out touring troupe's tour de force Frida, un retablo, one of the most clamored-for bilingual productions.

The show unfolds as a tapestry reflecting the rich and turbulent life of Frida Kahlo, one of Mexico’s most important artists and is performed by four actors portraying several characters; in addition to three aspects of Frida herself, they include her husband, Mexican artist Diego Rivera; Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky; and French surrealist André Breton.

Dañel Malan performing Frida Kahlo in touring productionThe play will be presented at Hope College on Sep. 14 and it is open to the public. There will also be public performances at Hampshire College (9/18 8pm, Amherst MA), and University of Massachusetts Amherst (9/19 7pm). If you’ve got friends in the area, you can let with them know that the vibrancy of Teatro Milagro’s work is coming their way. Most of these venues also are hosting the bilingual group's well known performance workshops. A show and workshop exclusively for students will also be presented at DePaul University.

Make sure you don't miss the acclaimed production Frida, un retablo when it is presented as part of La Luna Nueva (9/27 8pm), as well as the premiere of Teatro Milagro's new all-ages production, El Niño Diego (9/22 2pm) inspired by the childhood of Frida's larger-than-life husband, muralist Diego Rivera

LA LUNA NUEVA: TEATRO MILAGRO DE GIRA Y "EN CASA"

Frida Un Retablo follows the troubled life of Mexican Artist Kahlo and husband Diego Rivera

FRIDA, un retablo to perform in Longview

Last month the play FRIDA, un retablo toured down to Southern Oregon as part of a residency funded by the Cow Creek Umpqua Foundation, Juan Young Trust, Carpenter Foundation, Oregon Arts Commission, and the Thorndike Family.  Nothing like having many helping hands to make free community arts available for all!  The next community collaboration will be in Longview Washington.  Mark Morris High School Spanish Club and the RA Long Multicultural Club are teaming up to bring FRIDA, un retablo to Longview.  There will be a workshop for theatre and Spanish language students in the afternoon, then a public performance of the play at 7 pm in the evening. For more information and ticket prices, contact Travis Ruhter at 360-244-9601 or by email at truhter@longview.k12.or.us

"Frida, un retablo" continues to receive rave reviews!

In January, the play FRIDA, un retablo peformed to sold-out house for two straight weeks. Now the show is out on the road, most recently performing at Chemeketa Community College in Salem to more rave reviews ...

What a great weaving of the many facets of Frida’s life.

The music, costumes, scenery and the dancing were wonderful.

I loved the versatility of the actors.  Seamless back and forth between Spanish and English

I enjoyed the passion of the cast, and their ability to tell a story I was unfamiliar with.

For those of you who have friends or family in other cities, here are some upcoming tour highlights of public performances to share with them:

• Tues. Feb. 26, 3 pm – Umpqua Community College, Roseburg, OR

• Thurs. Feb. 28, 7 pm – Crater Performing Arts Center, Central Point, OR
