La Luna Nueva, is shining bright for two weeks. Paco Padilla's concert, followed by Ricardo Diaz's flamenco music and dance, and then Gerardo Calderón's release of his new CD,
Somtir, filled our initial weekend and got our audiences ready and clamoring for more... And more is what we will get: poetry, comedy, staged readings and much more music continue until the end of the festival, Sep. 28.
The maestro
Alfredo Muro is only one of our upcoming international performers. Having taught himself to play the guitar before apprenticing under Maestro Pepe Torres, he won top prize in a televised competition in his native Peru when he was only 13 years old. Since then, he has studied under and performed with many other masters and virtuosos of the guitar and has taken his music throughout the world, including multiple appearances in Chile, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Dominican Republic as well as Canada, Italy, Germany, Austria and Norway, and a very special performance at the Vatican for the late Pope John Paul II with his band, Perú de Oro.
We recently had a chance to hear from him about what he has been up to since his last show at Milagro, his music and inspiration, and what it is like for him to bring his masterful interpretations to audiences around the world.
"The art of Brazilian Guitar", the concert you will play this Saturday September 21 as part of La Luna Nueva features the sounds of Latin America's largest country, the cradle of samba and bossa nova. During his concert you perform songs from renowned musicians such as Tom Jobim, Baden Powell and Paulinho Tapajos, among others. Tell us how these artists have inspired this event and your own compositions.
If one were to write the most comprehensive encyclopedia about the guitar, it would be incomplete without a chapter for Brazilian guitar music, for its high quality of melody, harmony and rhythm.
Brazilian music has transcended the borders of other countries and so to mind come the names of Antonio Carlos (Tom) Jobim, who pioneered a sophisticated and elegant harmony; "O poetinha" ("The Little Poet") Vinicius de Moraes; who with his pen revolutionized Brazilian poetry, instilling freshness and a positive attitude to Brazil at the end of the 50s; and finally Joao Gilberto, whose soft and delicate singing style changed Brazilian song writing, but more so as his contribution as guitarist managed to create the feel of bossa nova, so you can say that there is a "before" and "after" Joao Gilberto.
In my compositions, I pour all that inspiration just mentioned, of course adding my own creativity, but being very respectful of the form.
Last year we enjoyed a very special presentation of Latin American music you played majestically . What happened to Alfredo Muro since the last time we saw him at Miracle?
I am a very restless artist and I always keep either creating or studying something new; if there's something beautiful about music is that you never stop learning!
For me it has been a very fruitful time since my last presentation in Portland, working on my new CD, composing, teaching and performing, which is my passion. This year I was invited to give a tour in Taiwan, where I will present seven concerts, and I will be performing in Mexico, North Carolina, and in October, I will proudly play in the Hall of the Americas of the Organization of American States, representing the music of several diplomatic missions for the second consecutive year. In 2014 I will tour in Mexico and Italy, and release a new CD with beautiful arrangements.
How does it feel to perform during La Luna Nueva?
For me it is always a pleasure to perform at the Milagro Theatre and support their great work sharing the culture of our community in Portland. It is a way of expressing who we are as Latino artists.
We know that " The art of Brazilian Guitar" is an unparalleled event. In your opinion, why is it a Can't-miss?
Thanks for calling my show unparalleled; I only know that playing a concert I fulfill a very special mission that God has given me: to reach the soul and emotions of the audience no matter how large or small the stage. For me to see smiling faces, full of emotion, is worth more than a standing ovation.

La Luna Nueva, brillará durante dos semanas. El concierto de Paco Padilla interpretando nueva canción mexicana, seguido por la música y el baile flamenco con Ricardo Diaz, y luego la presentación del nuevo CD de Gerardo Calderón,
Somtir, colmaron nuestro primer fin de semana, complaciendo a nuestro público que ya pide más ... Y mucho más es lo que tenemos preparado: poesía, comedia, lecturas dramatizadas y aún más música continuará hasta el final del festival este 28 de septiembre.
El Maestro
Alfredo Muro es sólo uno de nuestros próximos artistas internacionales. Después de haber aprendido por sí solo a tocar la guitarra, se convirtió en aprendiz del maestro Pepe Torres. A los 13 años de edad, ganó el primer premio en un concurso televisivo en su país natal, Perú. Desde entonces, ha estudiado y actuado con muchos otros maestros y virtuosos internacionalmente, y ha llevado su música por todo el mundo, incluyendo varias apariciones en Chile, Argentina, Perú, Brasil, República Dominicana, así como Canadá, Italia, Alemania, Austria y Noruega, y una actuación con su banda, Perú de Oro, en el Vaticano para el Papa Juan Pablo II.
Recientemente nos contó lo que ha estado haciendo desde su último show en Milagro, sobre su música y la inspiración, y lo que es para él para llevar sus magistrales interpretaciones al público de todo el mundo.
El concierto que ofrecerá este próximo sábado 21 de septiembre como parte de La Luna Nueva, “The art of Brazilian Guitar” (“El arte de la guitarra brasileña”) nos trae los sonidos del país más grande de Latinoamérica, de donde provienen la samba y bossa nova. Durante su concierto usted interpretará las canciones de renombrados músicos como Tom Jobim, Baden Powell y Paulinho Tapajos, entre otros. Cuéntenos como estos artistas han inspirado este evento y ¿han inspirado ellos sus propias composiciones?
Si existiera la más extensa enciclopedia de guitarra, estaría incompleta sino contara con un capítulo reservado a la música y guitarra brasileira, por su alta calidad melódica, armónica y rítmica.
La música brasileira ha trascendido las fronteras de otro países y por eso acuden a mi mente los nombres de Antonio Carlos (Tom) Jobim, quien fue responsable de proveer una armonía sofisticada y elegante, “O Poetinha” (“El Poetilla”) Vinícius de Moraes, quien con su pluma cambió toda la lírica brasilera, inculcando un frescor y una actitud positiva al Brasil de finales de la década de los 50s, y por último Joao Gilberto, cuya manera de cantar suave y delicadamente, le cambia el fraseo a la música brasileira, pero más aún su aporte como guitarrista logra crear ese toque para el bossa nova, con lo que se puede decir que hay un antes y un después de Joao Gilberto.
En mis composiciones, se vierte toda esa fuente de inspiración que acabo de mencionar, por supuesto que aportando mi propia creatividad, pero siendo muy respetuoso de las formas.
El año pasado disfrutamos una presentación muy especial de música latinoamericana que usted majestuosamente interpretó. ¿Qué ha pasado con Alfredo Muro desde la última vez que contamos con su presencia en Milagro?
Soy un artista muy inquieto y siempre me mantengo ya sea creando o estudiando algo nuevo; si algo hermoso tiene la música es que ¡uno nunca termina de aprender!
Para mí ha sido un tiempo muy fructífero desde mi última presentación en Portland, preparando mi nuevo CD, componiendo, enseñando y actuando, lo que es mi pasión. Este año he sido invitado a dar una gira en Taiwan, donde presentaré 7 conciertos, y también estaré presentándome en México, Carolina del Norte, y en octubre por El Día de la Raza, tendré el orgullo de presentarme por segundo año consecutivo en el Salón de las Américas de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA), representando la música de varias misiones diplómaticas. En el 2014 actuaré en México e Italia y presentaré mi nuevo CD, con bellos arreglos.
¿Cómo se siente de volver a presentarse en La Luna Nueva?
Para mi es siempre un gratísimo placer presentarme en el Teatro Milagro y apoyar su gran difusión cultural hacia nuestra comunidad en Portland. Es una manera de expresar quienes somos los artistas latinos.
Sabemos que “The art of Brazilian Guitar” es un evento inigualable. En su opinión ¿por qué nadie se lo puede perder?
Gracias por calificar de inigualable a mi evento, yo lo único que sé es que presentarme en concierto es para mí cumplir con una misión muy especial que Dios me ha encomendado: acercarme al alma y el sentimiento de la audiencia sin importar lo grande o pequeño que sea el escenario. Para mí el ver rostros sonrientes, llenos de emoción valen más que una ovación de a pie.
