Our
Thanksgiving newsletter could hardly convey how grateful we are for all
our patrons and donors, and among the individuals who shine in their
energy and efforts for Milagro and the local community is multitalented Joaquin Lopez,
a dynamic part of the family-owned restaurant La Bonita, which frequently dedicates the proceeds of a given day to a cause or organization. He was honored with the 2014 Spirit of Milagro award at ¡Viva Milagro!
This
Friday December 12, La Bonita Restaurant's 2710 N Killingsworth location will
be dedicating its proceeds to Milagro once again. It is a great
opportunity to enjoy delicious, authentic Mexican food by one of the
best local restaurants, you will be supporting a great organization as
well as the philantropic efforts of a local artist, entrepreneur and
leader.
If you've been there, you know you're in for a treat, like one of the 16 Best Burritos in America. If you haven't, this is a great opportunity to discover your new favorite place!

Olga is in Honduras!
Visiting Arts Administration Specialist for the United States Information Agency, conducting workshops in arts administration and fundraising with large and small organizations in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. So, when the US Embassy in Honduras was looking for a theatre arts specialist to conduct workshops on directing and acting for a couple of weeks in April, they naturally contacted José. Fortunately for Olga Sanchez, he recommended her! Olga submitted her paperwork, got her passport, and now she is in Tegucigalpa!
In Honduras, Olga will be directing a new short play,
“Esperanza para un mejor país” (Hope for a Better Nation) with Lucem Aspicio, a
student theatre group of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras
(Autonomous National University of Honduras).
Later this year, voters will elect a new President of Honduras, as well as 128
members of the National Congress and representatives in
local governments. The play, written by
Blanca Estrada is the winner of a recent contest sponsored by the US Embassy to
promote youth voter participation, and it will premiere as part of the XXIII Festival
Internacional de Artes Escénicas Bambú on Friday, April 12th.

GUAPA & the Portland Timbers!
![]() |
| José Valencia, Michelle Escobar, Tristan Nieto & Sofia May-Cuxim |
Portland Timbers forward José Valencia knows about this longing well. A young man from Colombia who's been playing soccer since he was five years old, he was approached to play professionally for the Colombian first-division club Independiente Santa Fé at the age of 16. It meant rearranging his school schedule, but he and his family knew he couldn't pass up the opportunity of a lifetime. It led him to play for Colombia's national team in the 2011 FIFA World Cup! In 2012, he was acquired by the Portland Timbers and, having fully recovered from knee surgery that kept out of much of last season, José Valencia, aka "El Trencito", will be starting their games when the season launches on March 3rd!
We could not believe our good fortune when we learned that José was able to take time out of his intense pre-season training schedule to visit our rehearsals this week. Working with our actors Michelle Escobar (Guapa), Tristan Nieto (Hakim) and Sofia May-Cuxim (Roly), José shared basic skills and trick moves that kept our actors running, jumping and kicking all over the rehearsal hall! He also shared his experiences as a young and professional futbolista. He's nicknamed "El Trencito" (the Little Train) after his father, popular Colombian international Adolfo Valencia, who is known as "El Tren" (the Train). However, he was raised by his mother and stepfather, who were more focused on Jose's commitment to his education. The decision for José to go professional did not come easy, but it has lead to good things for the family. With their blessing, José's younger sister has moved to the United States to attend Westview High School, learning English at a rapid pace, he told us with pride.
We truly appreciate the Portland Timbers' support of GUAPA, making it possible for José to share his time with us. He deepened our understanding of futbol in so many ways! We look forward to watching him and the Timbers take on the new season!
Late-breaking news! The women's team, the Portland Thorns will be providing a soccer clinic for all ages during the run of GUAPA! Stay tuned for more information!
Sponsor Spotlight: El Hispanic News
Marketing assistant Stefanus is back from his trip to Colombia and shares with us his new favorite reading material ...
As the cold Oregon climate forces us to bundle up into some little nook to keep warm, I comfortably found my favorite coffee shop, and with a hot cup of joe at hand I started to read El Hispanic News to practice and maintain my Spanish—I am a student at PSU studying Spanish, and I was thoroughly impressed at El Hispanic News' coverage of current local and international news. Even more, when I scanned through El Hispanic News' website, I found a calendar section that provided Intercambio de idiomas, Language Exchange, for English speakers wanting to practice Spanish, and vice versa. Suffice to say, El Hispanic News strives to be the primary source of Hispanic and world information to the SW Washington and Oregon’s Latino communities. Its goal is to educate, connect and serve the rural and urban Hispanic communities, while continuing to grow and produce an award-winning bilingual newspaper in Oregon and SW Washington. ¡Somos la revolución de la información!

Program Partner: Grand Avenue Florist
Marketing Assistant Stefanus writes ...
One day at Miracle Theatre, I came into the office with the usual felicitous stride and unbeknownst to me an elaborate vase of quartz, beige, vibrant red colored flowers had been placed on my table. What was going on? Was it my birthday? No, can’t be that because that falls on April 25 (hint, hint). I gazed at the calendar that read September 14, opening night of La Luna Nueva. Bingo! La Luna Nueva. Shucks, it was sort of pleasant surprise to receive a garden of magnificent flowers. I bet if muralist Diego Rivera gave more of these to Frida Kahlo, their rocky relationship would have been better. If you watch Frida, un retablo, onstage in January at Milagro, you will understand what kind of torrid relationship they had. Moral of this story: Get flowers from Grand Avenue Florist, which has been family-owned for 60 years and going, and a patron of Milagro for many seasons. Support Grand Avenue, because they support the Miracle!
Program Partner: Equal Exchange
What is family? To me, family is a unit which empowers me to go beyond my limit and to always strive the best, sustains me to be grounded and to stay firm on my beliefs that will benefit the people around me, and supports me during inclement times and moments of unforeseen events. Take for instance, in our upcoming show Guapa, Roly, a single mom burdened by life’s hardship, becomes inspired by a new addition to her family: Guapa, a natural-born athlete with a fiery desire to excel as an international soccer star. Here at Milagro, we believe in family because it incites bright, revolutionary, mind-blowing ideas and brings togetherness, camaraderie, unity. So we are elated that Equal Exchange is a part of our family — not only advertising in our programs, but supplying many of the wonderful beverages available at our concessions. Their slogan "Small Farmers Big Change" reveals the type of product, quality and service you can expect by choosing delicious delectable from Equal Exchange. Their ongoing discovery to unearth the best method to support local farmers to develop a better food system while coordinating with co-operative farmers is amazement itself. Please support our advertisers because they support the Miracle! Thanks, Equal Exchange!
¡Salud! to our program partner A to Z Wineworks
You know what wine makes me think of? Gatherings of familiar and soon-to-be familiar faces, a concert of musical instruments creating antiphonies, calls and responses, improvisation, an obscure deep rose lipstick smudged on some wine glass, quality moments with the complexity of wine, and a balanced evening—a perfect recipe for a delectable and delicious reunion. A to Z Wineworks weaves together an affordable selection of vinos to zenith quality vinos for those special occasions or for those moments of tranquility. If you don’t believe me, try one out and see for yourself, or two, or three, or four. Just make sure you drink responsibly, or you could end up voluntarily signing up for our Dance for a Dollar show.
Milagro is proud to have A to Z as one of our generous program advertisers. Please support them with your business, because they support the Miracle! Thanks guys!

Program Partner: Lincoln City
We asked marketing assistant Stefanus to tell us about some of our generous community partners who support the theatre by advertising in our programs. Lincoln City was one that resonated more than most ...
Sparkling, shimmering teal, emerald water swaying like a hammock on a summer day with lapping water close to shore swishing at the nestled and scattered iridescent sea shells. Having lived in Hawai’i for some time, my heart will always stay close to the beach life, and Oregoncoast.org has reunited me with the beach once more and cold water surfing—yes, there is surfing in Oregon’s cold water, and it’s great. To my amazement, this site has tons of outdoor and indoor activity information whether it’d be dining, kayaking, kiting, hiking, surfing, biking, musing the arts, relaxing at the beach—I bet the lovesick Calisto from our upcoming production of La Celestina would have had an easier job winning the heart of Melibea by taking her to Lincoln City. Here at Miracle, we are proud of our collaboration with Oregoncoast.org, Lincoln City and the Central Oregon Coast. Let’s go surf!
Program Partner: AAA Heating and Cooling, Inc.
Rain is near, fall is here! Yes, that’s right, rain and cold will besiege us soon enough. However, don’t let the frigid weather bog you down; let our friends at AAA Heating and Cooling solve all of your furnace issues, heating pump failures, duct and hose testing and sealing problems. Ask for John “Pepe” Rodarte for all your heating and cooling needs—how do you think the cabal of Aztec gods from our Raíz show stay so comfortable during these fall months? Furthermore, as a trade ally contractor of Energy Trust of Oregon, they can help with cash incentives and state energy tax credits to improve the energy efficiency of your home. This is one of the many reasons why Miracle is proud to have AAA Heating and Cooling as one of our generous program advertisers. Please support them with your business, because they support the Miracle! Thanks Triple-A!
Miami Inspiration
What a tremendous event, the
XXVII International Hispanic Theatre Festival, hosted by Teatro Avante in
Miami! Four weekends of plays, play readings, and an educational
component that covers a wide range of topics, it runs through July 29th...if
you're in Miami this year or any year, do check it out!
It was great to see LTC's
"Solitude" by Evelina Fernandez, whose themes
of Chicano middle class alienation resonated strongly with the Miami
audience (not a given), as well Urban Theatre Movement's "Short Eyes"
by Miguel Piñero (highly relevant in light of the recent Sandusky trial), and
"Infieles" by Marco Antonio de la Parra, which launched the new
Compañia Prometeo! To be clear, Teatro Prometeo has been around for 40
years but this is a new ensemble... adelante!
A new project has been launched,
I'd like to say 'this year' but ... over the past few years Latino theatre makers
from around the country have gathered in Baltimore, Chicago, Boston, Washington
DC, Los Angeles, thanks mostly to TCG (Theatre Communications Group).
TCG, which supports theatre makers around the country through a wide
variety of services, holds an annual conference that has enabled Latino artists
to meet with each other in these locations around the US. The project
is loosely called, "Latinos in Theatre'.
After the recent conference in
Boston, artists were mobilized to meet in LA, the Bay Area and most recently in
Miami, during the XXVII IHTF! This past Sunday's gathering included
folks from Minneapolis/St. Paul and NYC, as well as LA, Portland, and of course
Miami, which illuminated interesting regional differences with regard to
identity within our respective communities, audience-building and artist
training goals, and of course, the nature of our work. Shared strengths included: long-standing working relationships with Latin American and Spanish artists, an
extensive body of bilingual academic writing, and Longevity ~ Prometeo, 40
years; Teatro Avante, 34; LTC, 27; Miracle, 29: Teatro del Pueblo, 20;
IATI Theatre, 44. Also, two festivals represented: The State of
IberoAmerican Studies Series: Human Rights and Theatre Festival, 18 years in Minnesota; and, the
IHTF, 27 years in Miami!
The desire to build a national
Latino Theatre network is strong, and a variety of ideas about how to build
communications and collaboration are being generated through these
meetings. Here at Milagro, we're looking forward to hosting a gathering
with Latino theatre makers of the Pacific Northwest, we'll let you know as the
dates firm up!
Speaking of Milagro, I had the
honor of presenting the topic of "Creating Latino Theatre for
Non-Latinos" as part of the educational program of the IHTF. One of the
things that makes Milagro unique is that we are committed to presenting Latino
theatre, arts and culture programs even though we're not located in a community
with large numbers of Latinos; this is rare in the US. It means that we
have a unique opportunity to create work that, even though it is rooted in
Latino experience, history and culture, it demands universal relevance.
It allows us to create our work in collaboration with artists whose
voices deepen our understanding of the universal human experience. By
their participation, our work is transformed. I think of our Dia de
muertos shows in particular, and the diversity that's seen on our stage
and behind the scenes. We have the gift of creating work that is most
definitely not going to be found in any museum, because it is work that hasn't
been seen before. It's a whole new recipe...
I imagine a seed from a far-away place that's planted in new soil. It's not necessarily ideal soil or even a good climate for that seed to take root and grow to yield its familiar fruit. But here in Portland, the soil has other nutrients and plenty of rain! These good conditions have sustained the seed, roots and plant over the years. And now, that seed grows a new kind of fruit!
Le Bistro Montage – Milagro Friends and Neighbors
For opening night of Oedipus el Rey, Miracle had the great opportunity to introduce patrons to one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants. Le Bistro Montage is a new addition this year to our circle of opening night sponsors, but not new to the neighborhood. Their popular Cajun-style dishes and famous macaroni and cheese have delighted Portlanders for many years, and a partnership was just waiting in the wings for its chance to grace the stage. Peter Derosa, manager, has long been a big fan, but it took the networking of Sylvia Malan-Gonzalez to bring the partnership to fruition. Since formal introductions were made, Miracle and Montage are now great friends, with another sponsorship already planned for the summer volunteer party recognition (watch for details on that celebration coming soon!). In the meantime, have a taste of their wonderful food — it’s just a stone’s throw away from El Centro Milagro at 301 S.E. Morrison St. ¡Viva Montage!
With your help, Miracle receives multiple grant awards!
The holidays have brought with them such wonderful gifts that we just had to issue a special edition of the Miracle Insider to thank you for your help in securing this vital funding:
• $20,000 from The Collins Foundation to support the company’s 2011-2012 28th Season of five major stage productions, one of which (B’aktun 13) will tour Oregon and the U.S. accompanied by bilingual arts education programs for youth and educators. This funding also helps to produce a variety of smaller, community-based programs, including Posada Milagro (visit our Flickr site to see photos from this year’s celebration), designed to provide unique arts & culture experiences especially for underserved populations. The works slated for this season will provide a broad range of opportunities for deeper understanding of Latino culture, history and contemporary issues.
• $5,000 from The Bloomfield Family Foundation to support Teatro Milagro’s touring production B’aktun 13 as well as artist residencies in various communities in Oregon throughout the 2012 school year. In these residencies, Teatro Milagro’s bilingual artists share a curriculum that integrates elements self-esteem building and environmental awareness. While learning about good stewardship, the students develop an appreciation for the arts, a growing interest in science, and a sense of social responsibility, encouraging young people to think independently and take responsibility for their actions, and developing their skills as successful citizens and community leaders.
• $2,500 from KeyBank Foundation to sponsor Teatro Milagro’s “Journeys” artist residencies in Woodburn schools, which promote self-esteem through literacy-based projects for English language learners. With these residencies and workshops, Teatro Milagro inspires students to become more accepting of diversity and to look for opportunities to engage in community efforts that embrace all people’s differences. “KeyBank has a giving focus of economic self-sufficiency, rooted in the belief that economically self-sufficient individuals are empowered to face the challenges they encounter as they aspire to achieve their dreams,” said Jane Ellison, Director of Community Relations for KeyBank.
We are thrilled with these demonstrations of support, and we are grateful for your help in making them possible. You see, it’s your tax-deductible donation to Miracle Theatre that expresses grassroots community support to foundations like these as well as government agencies such as National Endowment for the Arts, Oregon Arts Commission and Regional Arts & Culture Council. What we’ve said all along is true: We couldn’t do this without you.
If you’ve already made your annual donation to support the Miracle, thank you! If not, please consider making a donation today. You can contribute online or over the phone (503-236-7253) with a credit card, or you can mail a check to:
Miracle Theatre Group
425 SE Sixth Ave.
Portland, OR 97214
Thank you, and see you at Milagro!
Another way to double the impact of your donation to Milagro
After you make your annual donation to Miracle Theatre Group, you make a matching gift to the Oregon Cultural Trust. Then, when tax time rolls around, you receive an Oregon state tax credit of up to $500 for individuals, $1000 for couples, or $2500 for corporations. And when you add up the deductions and credit, at the federal and state levels, the tax savings for cultural giving are impressive.
Oregon’s unique cultural tax credit is a powerful incentive. But the reason to give is to sustain and develop Oregon’s arts, heritage and humanities.
The Oregon Cultural Trust provides funding for Oregon’s cultural community, including Miracle Theatre Group. With a $200 million endowment, it will secure sustainable funding for Oregon culture in perpetuity. The Cultural Trust program is unique and has been ranked with the bottle bill and vote-by-mail as among Oregon’s most forward-thinking public policy measures. Together, 21,000 Oregonians have raised $25 million for culture, created more than $9 million in grants that benefit every county in Oregon and built the endowment to nearly $15.5 million.
The Cultural Trust was designed to direct support to cultural nonprofits in a multitude of ways. But it all starts with you. Find out more at http://www.culturaltrust.org
A shout out to Just Out
Miracle Theatre Group is very pleased to count Just Out among its partners this season. As a media sponsor for the Portland run of B'aktun 13, Just Out plays a key role in connecting the world premiere of this bilingual play with diverse audiences. The newspaper has been a cornerstone of the lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer community in Portland for nearly 30 years, and is a huge supporter of the arts in Portland, often featuring in-depth interviews with local LGBTQ artists. Just Out is also an essential resource for connecting with social services and community organizations dedicated to serving the LGBTQ community. Pick up a free copy of the paper at newsstands around town, or read the latest issue online at www.justout.com.
Program Partner: Montinore Estate
Miracle Theatre Group is proud to have support from program advertisers like Montinore Estate, a family owned and operated winery in the northern Willamette Valley whose 230 acres of grapes produce Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Rieslings, Gewürtzraminer and Müller-Thurgau. Carefully nurturing the land and working with winemakers to craft wines that capture the rolling hills and cool breezes of the Northern Willamette Valley, Rudy Marchesi and his daughter Kristin along with the wonderful staff and crew at Monitore Estate, craft wine for the dinner table that features fresh and lively flavors with structure and age. The wines reflect the thrill Rudy receives “in the simplicity of artistry.” You can sample some of their work when Montinore is featured at Miracle's special events, like opening nights. Miracle Theatre Group thanks Montinore Estate for its continued support of our production programs and salutes their philosophy of celebrating every day by growing grapes, making wine and loving life in the Willamette Valley!
